Toyota Cuts HVAC Noise Simulation Time by 90% with GPU-Accelerated CFD

As electric vehicles become quieter by eliminating traditional engine noise, secondary sounds—like those from heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems—are now more noticeable and can significantly impact passenger comfort.

Toyota Motor Europe faced this challenge head-on by partnering with Cadence to predict and reduce airflow-induced noise from HVAC vents before building a single prototype. Using the Cadence Fidelity LES Solver on the Millennium M1 Platform, the team harnessed GPU-accelerated large eddy simulation (LES) technology to achieve:

  • 10× faster performance compared to conventional CFD methods

  • Accurate acoustic predictions up to 5 kHz

  • Results within ±3 dBA of real-world physical tests

  • Full HVAC airflow and noise simulation in under 6 hours

This breakthrough in simulation speed and accuracy meant Toyota could evaluate design options earlier in the development cycle, drastically reducing the need for physical prototypes. The approach not only accelerated decision-making but also ensured that the final vehicle design delivered a quieter, more refined cabin experience.

Why It Matters
Traditional HVAC noise simulation methods can take days and require significant computational resources, making them costly and slow. With GPU-accelerated CFD, engineers can run high-fidelity simulations quickly enough to influence designs in real time—streamlining development, cutting costs, and improving passenger comfort in the era of electric mobility.
